SGS-LTER Standard Met Data: 1969- 2010 Manually Collected Standard Meteorological Data on the Central Plains Experimental Range, Nunn, Colorado, USA 1969 - 2011, ARS Study Number 6

This data package was produced by researchers working on the Shortgrass Steppe Long Term Ecological Research (SGS-LTER) Project, administered at Colorado State University. Long-term datasets and background information (proposals, reports, photographs, etc.) on the SGS-LTER project are contained in a comprehensive project collection within the Digital Collections of Colorado (http://digitool.library.colostate.edu/R/?func=collections&collection_id=3429). The data table and associated metadata document, which is generated in Ecological Metadata Language, may be available through other repositories serving the ecological research community and represent components of the larger SGS-LTER project collection.

The objective of this study is to collect baseline meteorological data for the CPER. Datasets auto12_climdb and man11_climdb have been processed for quality and missing values. additional information and referenced materials can be found:http://hdl.handle.net/10217/82146.

Data Access Policy

Data sets were provided by the Shortgrass Steppe Long Term Ecological Research (SGS-LTER) Program, a partnership between Colorado State University, United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, and the U.S. Forest Service Pawnee National Grassland. Significant funding for these data was provided by the National Science Foundation Long Term Ecological Research program (NSF Grant Number DEB-1027319). The SGS-LTER project (1980-2014) was established as one of the first sites in the US LTER Network and has produce a rich legacy of digital materials including reports, proposals, images, and data packages. Data, products and other information produced from the SGS-LTER are curated as a collection within the Digital Collections of Colorado (<![CDATA[http://digitool.library.colostate.edu/R/?func=collections&collection_id=3429]]>). Materials can be accessed from the Institutional Digital Repository of Colorado State University or upon request by emailing ecodata_nrel@colostate.edu. All data are open for dissemination and re-use for any purpose, but you must attribute credit to the owner and cite use appropriately according to the LTER Data Access Policy.

Description
Methods for this dataset: Objective: To collect baseline meteorological data for the CPER. Study Area: The main meteorological exclosure is in Section 27NE. The equipment is contained in an ungrazed area of section 27 on the Central Plains Experimental Range. This exclosure contains other equipment for other monitoring programs such as NADP and UVB. The vegetation is typical for upland grasslands, dominated by Bouteloua gracilis. Outside the exclosure, the rangeland is grazed from April - October. In addition to the main LTER met statin, recording raingages are located in the following CPER locations: (1) section 25NE, (2) Section 15SE, (3) Owl Creek exclosure in Section 11, and at the CSU hq in Section 21-SW. These gauges are functional from early March through October. Observations of maximum and minimum air temperatures and precipitation were recorded daily. Beginning June 24, 1970, other observations were added periodically, including wet and dry bulb temperatures, maximum and minimum pan temperatures, and pan evaporation. Atmometer (potential evaporation) readings were added July 4, 1985. Pan temperatures and evaporation are taken seasonally when temperatures are above freezing. A daily index on wind type, hail size, snow cover, and cloud cover is included when appropriate.
