SGS-LTER Effects of grazing on ecosystem structure and function (GZTX): Bite Counts on the Central Plains Experimental Range, Nunn, Colorado, USA 1993-2008, ARS Study Number 32

This data package was produced by researchers working on the Shortgrass Steppe Long Term Ecological Research (SGS-LTER) Project, administered at Colorado State University. Long-term datasets and background information (proposals, reports, photographs, etc.) on the SGS-LTER project are contained in a comprehensive project collection within the Digital Collections of Colorado (http://digitool.library.colostate.edu/R/?func=collections&collection_id=3429). The data table and associated metadata document, which is generated in Ecological Metadata Language, may be available through other repositories serving the ecological research community and represent components of the larger SGS-LTER project collection.

When the CPER was established in 1939, researchers constructed a .5-1 ha grazing exclosure in each of the pastures. These areas have remained protected from grazing for the past 70 years. The remaining areas have been grazed for the past 20+ years. This collection of pastures and exclosures provided an extraordinary opportunity to reinitiate grazing and protection, and evaluate the balance between degradation and aggradation. We proposed to rearrange fences and expose areas to grazing that have been protected for 50 years, and protect areas from grazing that had been grazed for 50 years. The combinations of grazing conditions were: 1. Long-term protection 2. Long-term grazing (moderate) 3. 50 years of protection followed by grazing 4. 50 years of grazing followed by protection Net primary production, nitrogen dynamics, cattle utilization, and community dynamics of vegetation were measured. Data Access Policy

Data sets were provided by the Shortgrass Steppe Long Term Ecological Research (SGS-LTER) Program, a partnership between Colorado State University, United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, and the U.S. Forest Service Pawnee National Grassland. Significant funding for these data was provided by the National Science Foundation Long Term Ecological Research program (NSF Grant Number DEB-1027319). The SGS-LTER project (1980-2014) was established as one of the first sites in the US LTER Network and has produce a rich legacy of digital materials including reports, proposals, images, and data packages. Data, products and other information produced from the SGS-LTER are curated as a collection within the Digital Collections of Colorado (http://digitool.library.colostate.edu/R/?func=collections&collection_id=3429). Materials can be accessed from the Institutional Digital Repository of Colorado State University or upon request by emailing ecodata_nrel@colostate.edu. All data are open for dissemination and re-use for any purpose, but you must attribute credit to the owner and cite use appropriately according to the LTER Data Access Policy.

Description
Methods for this dataset: In each of the three treatments (GZGZ, UNGZ, and UNUN), you will take data along 5, random 50 m transects. Work in teams of two, with one person recording and the other looking for bites. As you walk along the transect, hold a 10 cm long wire perpendicular to the tape. Look for bites in the area from the edge of the tape to the end of the wire. Take your fingers and pinch the area of the plant that shows evidence of being bitten by a large mammal. Each pinch should be considered a separate bite. Record the number of bites on each species of plant. QAQC Instructions: When starting a site-treatment, one person will be in charge of checking off each of the 5 transects sampled within each of the 3 treatment areas. Each team will call the treatment and transect number from where they have collected data to the person with the check-off sheet. The team member will make sure that all information is complete and correct on the data sheet. The person with the check-off sheet will double check that data have been collected from each and every transect in each treatment area. All sheets will be given to the call-check person, who will be the last to leave the treatment area. The sheets for a particular site-treatment should be clipped together and placed in the envelope for that site. The check-person should not proceed to the next site before completing the master check form, and verifying the site and treatment code by checking the map for that site. When the site is done, there should be three separate packets of sheets (one for each of the 3 treatments sampled)
